•  What is the message of Amos?

Conviction: So What?

•  Where does this fit?

- Amos portrays a picture of a stern God who is serious about the consequences of sin and hypocritical worship.

- Amos provides a clear presentation of the heart of God for the poor and oppressed and the responsibility of those who have been blessed to assist them.

- Amos reiterates the importance of heartfelt worship in spirit and in truth.

•  What should we believe?

- God is indignant and impatient with those who enjoy living in luxury while the poor all around them suffer in poverty.  He gets particularly upset with us when we separate ourselves from the plight of the poor and simply focus on enjoying our high standard of living.

- Being better than others or not as bad as others is NOT God’s standard.

- If we disregard the suffering of others, God views our worship of Him as hypocritical.

•  How should we behave?

- Being generous with our resources to assist those in need around us.

- Being genuine in our worship because the Lord is worthy.

- Being brutal with our self-reflection according to God’s standard and not comparing ourselves to others.

Next Steps
•  Take a serious inventory of your life. Is the Lord pleased? Does “justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream” in your life?

•  Are you consuming your wealth or stewarding it?  Seek out ways to bless others with your resources.

•  Consider how engaged you are in true worship of the Lord.

•  Keep your eyes on Jesus. He is the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.

Our Home Churches meet weekly to facilitate quicker relational depth, study the same passage taught Sunday to help apply Scripture in the context of community, and pray with one another.

Home Church Questions
•   Read Amos 2:6-16 and 9:11-15.

•   Was there anything new or insightful in this message?

•   Was there anything you know you can or should immediately apply?

•   What did you struggle with in this message?  What did not make sense or caused you to evaluate your own life more deeply?

•   How would your life personally, or the life of your family be different if you fully lived out the truths in this message?

•   Why is it so easy to judge ourselves by the standard of “better than others”?

•   How important is addressing issues of social justice in our world?  How can we make a difference in the lives of people in need?  How involved are you?

•   How do we keep a balance (if it is needed) between the gospel and social justice?  What would Amos say?

•   What do you make of the fact that there is only one call for repentance (5:1-17) and one passage that offers hope (9:11-15) in this entire book?
