Context: Who, Where, When and Why?

•  Who composed Lamentations?

•  When was Lamentations written?

•  Where were he and his audience?

•  Why was he writing?

Content: How and What?

•  How is Lamentations organized?

A     “No Comfort.”  - The misery of Jerusalem's citizens (1:1-22)

          B    “No Rest.”  - God's punishment of Jerusalem (2:1-22)

  C   “No Fear.”  - Jeremiah's personal reactions (3:1-66)

                      B’    “No Help.”  - God's severity toward Jerusalem (4:1-22)

A’     “No Joy.”  - The response of the godly (5:1-22)

*Lamentations uses Acrostics to give a sense of full expression to the Lament.

•  What is the message of Lamentations?

Conviction: So What?

•  Where does this fit?

- Lamentations is a reminder of the consequences of sin and rebellion.

- Lamentations provides an outlet and a guide for true repentance.

- Lamentations is a reminder of God’s faithfulness to discipline and to forgive.

•  What should we believe?

- The Lord is wonderfully patient, fully just, and abundantly gracious.

- The Lord will judge unbelievers and discipline believers.

- The Lord does not abandon His plan or His people.

•  How should we behave?

- Offer to God a full expression of your mourning, grief, and sorrow.

- Turn from sin, repent, embrace God’s grace and live for Him.

- Never give up on yourself as long as you walk in God’s grace.

Next Steps
•  Make true biblical lament an option in your life.  Write a lament for your own sin.

•  Return to any unfinished business of lament, grief, mourning, repentance and give it the full expression it needs.

•  In your “lamentations”, always make sure you finish with the Lord. Praise Him.
