Apostasy and God’s Grace - Younger

Tola: Grandson of Dodo (10:1-2)
Graciously, God occasionally restores some semblance of order
in order to advance His overall purposes.

Jair: Upward and Downward at the Same Time (10:3-5)
The quest for power and influence
is not limited to major political people.

Israel: Israel Steps Over the Line (10:6-18)
The patient severity of God's justice
and boundlessness of His compassionate grace
is an ever-present reality in the life of His people.

Through the good and the bad,
the big and the small, and the rich and the poor
God is always advancing His purposes.

Next Steps
Truth:
God will never give up on His children but you may pass a point of no return.
Warning: Repeated shallow repentance will not put you in good standing with God
Challenge: Face your sin honestly, confess it and repent.

Home Church Questions

•  Read Judges 10:1-18.

•  What stands out in this passage or from the message?

•  Like the Israelites of old, why do we keep on repeating the same cycles of sin and
    confession?

•  What do you make of the variety of gods the Israelites worshipped? Why so many and such variety?

•  The passage (verse 7) says that God was angry.  How does that strike you?  Can God be angry?  How is His anger different than ours?

•  The same verse tells us that God "sold" them.  Why would God do this?

•  Discuss the repeated confessions of the Israelites.  This is the seventh time this has happened in Judges. How does this ongoing repetition inform God's response?  How is this similar to our own lives?

•  God says, "I will no longer save you." How does that make you feel?

•  One translation renders verse 16 as "Finally the Lord grew tired of seeing Israel suffer so much."  How does this make you feel about God?

•  Is there a contradiction is this passage?  Did the Israelites ever truly repent?  Did God ever promise to deliver them after saying He would not?
