Introduction: The Screaming Message of the Silence of God

Jephthah: An Outcast Becomes a Thug (11:1-3)

When God's people abandon Him as the priority in their lives

families eventually disintegrate into chaotic battlegrounds.

The Elders: A Thug Becomes a General (11:4-11)

When God's people take matters into their own hands

the results are always disastrous at best.

History: Negotiations Become a War (11:12-28)

Even when we get it all wrong

(when we look like we got it all right)

God is faithful to His people

and in the business of setting it all right.

While He may have to use thugs and ruffians,

narcissists and warmongers, bad theology and manipulation,

God is always advancing His purposes.

Next Steps
Truth:
God uses us, even when we are not fully qualified.  But that is certainly not ideal.

Warning: Just because you kind of know God's story does not mean you apply it well.

Challenge: Know God's story so that you can effectively be a part of it.

Home Church Questions
•  Read Judges 11:1-28.
•  What stands out in this passage or from the message?
•  What are your first impressions of Jephthah?
•  Jephthah is bullied and mistreated by his brothers.  Does this explain/justify any of his behavior?
•  Why are the leaders of the Gileadites willing to take Jephthah as a "commander"and then as their "head"?
•  Talk about all of the politics going on in the passage.  Promises made and not kept.  Negotiating with hidden agendas. Playing loose with the facts.
•  Without Ken's comments would you have known the holes in Jephthah's narration of Israelite history?  Is precision really all that important?
•  Can you summarize Jephthah's three appeals:  Historical, Theological, Chronological?
•  Why do you think the King of Ammon did not acquiesce to Jephthah's argument?
