Home Church Questions

•   Read Nahum 1:1-3:19 (yes, the whole book).

•   The evil and cruelty of Assyria (Nineveh) was well known to Judah, and a real and pressing danger to Judah. If you were living during that time, what would you be feeling?

•   In what sense then, did the message of Nahum bring comfort to the people of Judah (the southern kingdom).

•   Reflect on the descriptions of God in 1:1-3 as contrasted with 1:7. What evil and injustices have you experienced in your own life or observed in the world around you? How would the character of God described in these verses shape your view of those injustices?

•   Read Psalm 89:14. How do you see the message of Nahum in this verse?

•   Jonah’s visit to Nineveh and Nahum’s prophecy of Nineveh’s destruction was separated by 100-120 years. Contrast the message of Jonah to the message of Nahum. What does that tell you about the character and plan of God?

•   Read 2 Peter 3:7-9. What insights does this give you about God’s ways with Nineveh?

•   Romans 12:19 records one of the “I will’s” from God. How can this “I will” help us deal with the injustices in the world around us?

•   What comfort can the people of God receive from the message of Nahum? What comfort can you personally receive?

•   In particular, 1:7 describes God as a “refuge” in times of trouble for those who trust in him. What troubling circumstances are in your life right now, and how can you make God your refuge for those circumstances? What difference will it make in your life to do so?
