The Meaning of the Minor Judges - Way

Modern Idolatry - Younger

The Idol of Self - Younger

Introduction: A Survey of the Twelve Judges

Israel's Idolatrous Rebellion and the Lord's Righteous Wrath (3:7-8)
God will discipline His people when they do not worship Him exclusively.

Israel's Cry for Help and the Lord's Gracious Salvation (
3:9)
God graciously saves His people when they cry out to Him.

Israel's Evil Oppressor and the Lord's Overpowering Strength  (
3:10-11)
God empowers willing leaders to do great things for Him.

Though God may discipline us with the humiliating consequences of our sin,
He is willing to deliver us by demonstrating His power
and showing His right to our loyalty and worship.

Next Steps
Truth:  God is faithful to discipline us and deliver us in order to teach us to worship him.
•  Warning:
God will allow us to experience the humiliating consequences of our sin.
•  Challenge:  God graciously delivers when we cry out to Him.

Home Church
Our Home Churches meet weekly to facilitate quicker relational depth, study the same passage taught Sunday to help apply Scripture in the context of community, and pray with one another.  Home Church helps our body seek God’s best for one another.

Home Church Questions

•  Read Judges 3:7-11.

•  What stands out in this passage or from the message?

•  Why do you think Othniel is not one of the major Old Testament characters we talk about?

•  How do you know if you have an idol?

•  How is God's anger both good news and bad news?

•  How have you experienced the discipline of God in your life? Is there a difference between God's discipline and the natural consequences of sin?

•  The Lord's Spirit was "on Othniel." What does that mean?  Is that different than the indwelling Holy Spirit we studied in Romans 8?

•  What is God's ultimate purpose in both His discipline and deliverance?

•  What is the difference between crying out and repenting?
