Introduction: An Old Testament Review
The Heart of a Theologian (9:1-5)
Our hearts should be broken over lost souls.
• An Anguished Heart for a Lost People (9:1-3)
• A Privileged People with a Hard Heart (9:4-5)
The Heart of God (9:6-29)
God’s sovereign election is based solely on His will
and His purpose to bring glory to Himself
not on our performance or intentions.
• Natural Selection vs. Supernatural Selection (9:6-9)
• Effort vs. Election (9:10-13)
• Merit vs. Mercy (9:14-18)
• Self-centered Perspective vs. Sovereign Purpose (9:19-23)
• Universal Right vs. Righteous Remnant (9:24-29)
The Heart of the Matter (9:30-33)
Righteousness can be attained
only by faith in Jesus Christ, not by works.
• Gentiles vs. Jews (9:30-31)
• Works vs. Faith (9:32-33)
For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things
To Him be glory forever! Amen
Romans 11:36 (NIV)
Next Steps
• Place God and His glory at the center of your world.
• Repent from the belief that God is sitting in heaven to serve you and reorient your priorities so that you are living here to serve God.

Home Church
Our Home Churches meet weekly to facilitate quicker relational depth, study the same passage taught Sunday to help apply Scripture in the context of community, and pray with one another. Home Church helps our body seek God’s best for one another.
Home Church Questions
• Read Romans 9:1-33.
• What was the main point of the message this week?
• Read through the first five verses of chapter nine again. What do you notice about Paul's affection for the lost? List as many observations as you can about his knowledge and connection to people who do not know Christ.
• What lessons can you learn from Paul's heart for lost people?
• Paul lists the privileges of the Jewish people in verses 4-5. What is the "one thing" they missed?
• Is the doctrine of “Election” or "Predestination" a new or troubling truth for you? In addition to Romans 9, read the following verses and list some bservations about this important doctrine.
• 1 Peter 1:1-2 • 2 Thessalonians 2:13 • Ephesians 1:4-5
• All of us struggle with giving up control to another, even ng up that control to God. This passage forces us to confront once again the reality that God saves us and we do not save ourselves. In the final analysis we are totally and utterly dependent on His grace. It all comes down to the difference between works and faith. What areas are currently hard for you to give up to God?
