Proverbs: The Way of Wisdom
Thinking Like a Proverbs Person
(Proverbs 1:1-7)
Definitions:
• “Wisdom” is skill, craftsmanship – especially in living life!
• A “Proverb” is an object lesson built on an illustration that provides a choice between wisdom and folly.
• The “Fear of the Lord” is the reverential awe of God that terrifies and attracts.
Purposes:
• The purpose of Proverbs is to lead the one who fears the Lord to the attainment of wisdom and discernment.
The Introduction to Proverbs
Title: The Proverbs of Solomon 1:1
Twofold Purpose Stated 1:2
• To attain moral skill in living 1:2a
• To attain mental discernment 1:2b
Twofold Purpose Expanded 1:3-6
• To attain moral skill in living 1:3-4
• Parenthesis: Results of Gaining Wisdom 1:5
• To attain mental discernment 1:6
Motto: The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. 1:7
The Way of Wisdom:
The wise person has a fundamental orientation of respectful submission to the Lord
and skillfully produces a quality life based on discerning moral choices.
Next Steps
• Pray that God would give you wisdom.
• Pray that God would make you discerning.
• Deepen your “fear of the Lord.”

• Discuss the idea that the book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom. Does this make you uncomfortable in any way? Why?
• The whole point of the book of Proverbs is to help you make choices. Are you usually a confident choice maker, a little less than confident, or a second guesser?
• Discuss the difference between knowledge (know the facts) and wisdom (using the facts well). When have you experienced or observed this difference yourself?
• It takes “moral discipline” to live a wise life. How does that work?
• The fear to the Lord is a foundation to a well-crafted life. Who do you know that lives or has lived this way?
