Introduction: Canaanization Then and Now

Micah Makes a New Religious Shrine
Rejection of God’s instruction and authority
leads to chaotic lives that are too baffling to understand.
(17:1-6)

Micah Buys a New Priest
You can be religious
without being spiritual.
(17:7-13)

The Tribe of Dan Seeks a New Home
When you are not fully committed to God’s plan
you can be deluded into thinking your plan is best
(often convincing yourself it is God’s plan).
(18:1-7)

The Tribe of Dan Buys a New Priest
When you are pursuing your own interests
you will often presume the favor of God
and twist your religion to affirm your pursuits.
(18:8-21)

The Tribe of Dan Sets Up a New Religious Shrine
Self-serving interests and pursuits
cannot be covered up with religious rituals.
(18:22-31)

When God’s people are ignorant of His instruction
and rebel against His authority
(putting themselves at the center of their lives)
they are often indistinguishable from the world around them.

Next Steps
•  Truth:  Rejecting God's plan and authority creates chaos.
•  Warning: It is very easy to deceive yourself into thinking God is on your side when He is not.
•  Challenge: Be willing to live a life that is distinct from the world around you.
