Samson Lessons - Chisholm

Attitude Check & God’s Grace - Younger

Samson in Context:

•  The Context of Judges - The Beginning of the End

•  The Context of the Samson Stories - High Hopes

The Grace of God When We Don't Ask
God delivers His chosen people, not because they deserve it, earn it,
or even ask for it but solely on the basis of His grace.

(13:1-7)

The Grace of God When We Don't Understand
God delivers His chosen people solely on the basis of His grace
even when we are unaware or do not appreciate His work in our lives.

(13:8-23)

The Grace of God When We are Not in Control
God delivers His chosen people, solely on the basis of His grace
in order to advance His purposes and be faithful to His covenant promises.
(13:24-25)

The grace of God dominates the story of God for the glory of God
regardless of our participation or understanding.

Next Steps
Truth:
God's grace and not our performance is central to God's story.
Warning: Do not be so focused on your own story that you miss God working in His story.
Challenge: Pay attention to the story God is writing in your life.

Home Church
Our Home Churches meet weekly to facilitate quicker relational depth, study the same passage taught
Sunday to help apply Scripture in the context of community, and pray with one another.  Home Church helps our body seek God’s best for one another.

Home Church Questions
•  Read Judges 13:1-25.

•  What stands out in this passage or from the message?

•  Why do you think the Israelites stopped crying out to the Lord?  Are there any parallels in your life?

•  In what ways have you seen the grace of God active in your life even when you were not asking for it?

•  When have you known in retrospect that God was at work but you were unaware until much later?

•  Make some observations about the state of the family in this narrative.  How would you describe Manoah's marriage?  What kind of communication issues do you see here?

•  The Net Bible note on verse 18 states "“Why you ask for my name, for it is incomprehensible?” the Hebrew adjective (Pāl’iy, wonderful, incomprehensible”) refers to what is in a category of its own and is beyond full human understanding. Note the use of this word in Psalm 139:6, where God's knowledge is described as incomprehensible and unattainable."What ways have you found that God is "beyond understanding"?

•  God sets Samson apart from the timer of his birth/conception.  The Spirit begins to stir in him from the very beginning and yet Samson does not exhibit any positive spiritual character at any point in his life. What do you make of that?
